Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Powerplant

Where is it located?

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Powerplant is located in southeastern Ukraine on the banks of the Dnieper River, near the city of Enerhodar.

What is its significance?

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Powerplant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and one of the ten largest in the world. It historically played a critical role in Ukraine's electricity generation.

Is it operational?

The plant has been under Russian control since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. While it currently isn't generating power, it is in a mostly shut down state called "cold shutdown." However, the situation at the plant is still considered risky by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) due to the ongoing conflict and the importance of maintaining safety systems.

What are some of the safety concerns?

There have been several safety concerns surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Powerplant since its capture by Russia. These include shelling in the area, a temporary loss of off-site power, and the presence of Russian military personnel at the plant. The IAEA has called for the establishment of a safety and security zone around the plant.
