Why Police Stations Will Install DNA Systems: Pros and Cons

Overview:

The Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, passed in April 2022, allows for modern identification techniques, including DNA systems, to be installed in around 1,300 police stations nationwide. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is spearheading this initiative.

Why Install DNA Systems:

Improved Accuracy: DNA data can be extremely reliable for identifying individuals.

Streamlined Investigations: Helps in quicker resolutions of criminal cases.

Modernization: Advances the technology used in crime-fighting.

National Security: Centralized database for improved national security protocols.

Concerns & Challenges:

Data Protection: Risks around unauthorized access and data leakage.

Privacy Rights: Questions about infringing on citizens' right to privacy.

Officer Training: Proper handling of DNA samples requires specific training.

Technical Issues: Limited connectivity and lack of secured Internet lines in smaller states.

NCRB's Safeguards:

The NCRB has advised on implementing strong safeguards to prevent misuse.

Only designated officials will have real-time access to this sensitive data.

Unresolved Issues:

The scope of DNA collection in crimes like cheating and snatching remains unclear.

Destruction of data for falsely implicated individuals still a concern.
