Supporting Traditional Skills and Craftsmanship
In a bid to empower and uplift traditional craftspeople and artisans, the Indian government has introduced the "PM Vishwakarma" scheme. This scheme, with an impressive outlay of ₹13,000 crore, was officially approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled this initiative during his Independence Day speech, emphasizing its focus on preserving the "Guru-Shishya parampara" and enhancing traditional skills. The scheme aims to provide credit support at a concessional interest rate of 5%, skill enhancement, and toolkit incentives to these skilled craftsmen and women.
Key Highlights of the Vishwakarma Scheme:
1. Tradition and Skills Reinforced: The scheme seeks to reinforce the traditional "Guru-Shishya parampara" and promote traditional skills passed down through generations.
2. Comprehensive Coverage: Encompassing 18 traditional trades such as carpentry, blacksmithing, pottery, and more, the scheme aims to benefit a wide range of artisans.
3. Empowerment through Support: Artisans and craftspeople will be provided with credit support up to ₹2 lakh at a low-interest rate of 5%. This financial backing aims to boost their businesses and creativity.
4. Skill Enhancement: The scheme offers both basic and advanced skilling programs, along with a stipend of ₹500 per day during training. Beneficiaries will receive support to acquire modern tools, fostering skill improvement.
5. Scope for Growth: PM Vishwakarma scheme has ambitious targets - covering 5 lakh families in its inaugural year and a cumulative 30 lakh families over the span of five years.
6. Digital Integration: The scheme not only emphasizes traditional craftsmanship but also encourages artisans to integrate with digital transactions and marketing support.
7. Honoring Traditions: With a nod to the skilled OBC (Other Backward Classes) community, the scheme aims to empower weavers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, barbers, and more.
