Endometriosis is a medical condition characterized by the growth of tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus, known as the endometrium, occurring outside the uterine cavity. This misplaced tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the outer surface of the uterus, and other organs within the pelvis. It continues to act as it normally would — thickening, breaking down, and bleeding — during each menstrual cycle. However, because this tissue has no way to exit the body, it becomes trapped, leading to pain, inflammation, and, in some cases, the formation of scar tissue and adhesions, which can cause organs to stick together.
The primary symptoms of endometriosis include pelvic pain, especially associated with menstrual periods, infertility, and other symptoms like excessive bleeding, fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, and bloating. The severity of pain does not necessarily indicate the extent of the condition; some people with mild endometriosis can have severe pain, while those with advanced endometriosis may have little discomfort.
The exact cause of endometriosis remains unclear, but it may involve factors such as retrograde menstruation, immune system disorders, hormonal imbalances, or genetic predisposition. Treatment for endometriosis may include medications for pain relief, hormone therapy to slow endometrial tissue growth, and surgical options for more severe cases.
Managing endometriosis often requires a multi-disciplinary approach, including medical treatments, lifestyle adjustments, and sometimes surgery. Although there is currently no cure for endometriosis, effective management can significantly reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected.
