UN 2023 Water Conference

► Introduction

The United Nations Water Conference, held from March 22-24, 2023, at the UN Headquarters in New York, marked a pivotal moment in the global approach to water management and sustainability. Known formally as the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the 2018-2028 International Decade for Action, the conference aimed to bolster efforts toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water.

► Attendance and Engagement

The event drew an impressive attendance of over 6,500 participants, including government representatives, intergovernmental organizations, UN system entities, and various stakeholders. The high level of engagement underscored the global community’s commitment to addressing water sustainability issues.

► The Water Action Agenda

A key outcome of the conference was the adoption of the Water Action Agenda. This agenda consists of approximately 700 voluntary commitments, including financial pledges, collaborative projects, and specific actions. These commitments are geared towards enhancing water resource management and advancing the related SDGs.

► Conference Dynamics

The conference featured six plenary meetings and five interactive dialogues. These sessions provided a platform for robust discussions and the exchange of ideas and best practices. Key messages and insights from the conference were captured in a summary prepared by the President of the General Assembly. This summary will contribute to the high-level political forum on sustainable development (HLPF), fostering further dialogue and action on water-related issues.

► Conclusion

The UN 2023 Water Conference served as a critical step forward in the global endeavor to safeguard water resources for current and future generations. The commitments made under the Water Action Agenda promise to drive significant progress in the management and preservation of this indispensable resource.

► Looking Ahead

As stakeholders continue to work towards these commitments, the impact of the Water Action Agenda will likely become increasingly evident, offering hope for more sustainable water management practices worldwide. The ongoing review and feedback mechanisms established during the conference will ensure that progress is monitored and that the global community remains aligned in its efforts to achieve water-related SDGs.
