Summits for Democracy: Themes and A Chronological Overview




First Summit (December 9-10, 2021):

• Initiative: Initiated by the United States, led by President Biden, focusing on global democracy revitalization.

• Focus Areas: Addressing authoritarianism, corruption, and enhancing human rights.

• Format: Conducted virtually, gathering world leaders to deliberate on strengthening democratic governance.



Second Summit (March 29-30, 2023):

• Co-hosts: United States, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, and the Republic of Zambia.

• Objective: Evaluated progress on the first summit’s commitments and tackled new democratic challenges.

• Key Decision: The Republic of Korea was selected to host the next Summit for Democracy.



Third Summit (Date and Format to Be Determined):

• Host: Set to be hosted by the Republic of Korea, as announced during the second summit.


Themes and Goals Across Summits:

• These summits serve as platforms for reinforcing commitments to democracy, confronting challenges, and promoting a unified approach to safeguard democratic values and human rights globally.
