SIMPLIFIER: AGNIVEER SCHEME

What is the Agniveer Scheme?

The Agniveer scheme, introduced in June 2022, recruits youth between 17.5 to 21 years for a four-year service in the armed forces. After four years, they receive a certificate and a ‘Seva Nidhi’ of Rs 11.71 lakh. Only 25% are retained for longer service.

What are the main criticisms of the Agniveer scheme?

Critics argue that:

• 75% of recruits do not receive long-term benefits or gratuity.
• The four-year service period is too short.
• The upper age limit should be raised to 23.

What is the critical analysis of the scheme?

• Shortcomings Identified: Some argue that the scheme lacks long-term job security and benefits for 75% of recruits.
• Service Duration: The four-year service period is seen as insufficient for career stability.
• Age Limit: There are calls to increase the upper age limit to 23 to provide more opportunities for youth.

What steps has the government taken to address these concerns?

The government is considering:

• Raising the recruitment age to 23.
• Increasing the retention percentage to 50%.
• Providing preference for government jobs and special degree programs for Agniveers.

How will the government support Agniveers who are not retained?

The Centre has assured:

• Preference in government job recruitment.
• A special three-year skill-based bachelor’s degree program through IGNOU.
• First preference for recruitment into CAPF and Assam Rifles.

Why is this scheme significant?

The scheme aims to modernize the armed forces with young, tech-savvy individuals while addressing the future employment prospects of those who serve for a short term.
