Shahpurkandi Dam: Basics



Overview
The Shahpurkandi Dam Project is a multipurpose venture on the Ravi River in Punjab, near the Jammu and Kashmir border. It includes a dam and two hydropower plants for irrigation, energy production, and flood control.

Construction
- Began in 1995
- Completed recently (after nearly three decades)
- Delays due to funding issues and disputes between Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir

Specifications
- Dam height: 55.5 meters
- Hydropower plants: 206 MW installed capacity

Benefits
- Irrigates 37,000 hectares across Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir
- Generates additional power
- Enables full capacity operation of the nearby Ranjit Sagar Dam

Indus Water Treaty Impact
- Allows better utilization of India's allocated water share from the Ravi River
- Reduces spillage to Pakistan

Hydropower Projects Status
- Expected completion by end of 2025
- Full operational benefits in terms of power generation
