Sela Tunnel: A Gateway to Himalayan Connectivity

It is a new infrastructure project in India that will provide year-round connectivity between Guwahati in Assam and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. Here's a breakdown of the key points:

Purpose:
Provides all-weather access to Tawang, a strategically important location near the India-China border.

Length:

Two main tunnels:
                       T1 (shorter): 1003.34 meters
                       T2 (longer): 1594.90 meters
Escape tunnel (alongside T2): 1584.38 meters
Project claimed to be the longest bi-lane tunnel in the world at such altitude (13,116 feet).

Benefits:

Enables movement of troops, supplies, and machinery throughout the year.
Reduces travel time between Tawang and Dirang by 12 kilometers (saving 90 minutes).
Improves strategic mobility for the Indian Army along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Challenges:

Construction in difficult terrain and high altitude.
Delays due to a cloudburst last July.
Third-party audit conducted after a tunnel collapse in another part of India.

Current Status:Completed and ready for inauguration.
