What are the Robo-Dogs?
The Robo-Dogs, known as MULES (Multi-Utility Legged Equipment), are robotic units designed in the shape of dogs. They are equipped with thermal cameras and sensors for surveillance and can carry light loads through steep and uneven terrain. They can also be integrated with small arms for combat purposes.
Where will they be used?
These robotic dogs will be deployed primarily in mountainous and challenging terrains, especially in areas where there is a high risk of terrorist activities. They will aid in surveillance, reconnaissance, and carrying supplies to frontline soldiers.
When will they be inducted?
The first batch of 25 robotic MULES has already undergone pre-dispatch inspection and is expected to be inducted into the Indian Army soon. The contract for the emergency procurement of 100 units was signed in September 2023.
Significance for Border Management:
The induction of robotic MULES is significant for enhancing border management in several ways:
1. Improved Surveillance: Equipped with advanced thermal cameras and sensors, these robo-dogs can monitor and detect movements in challenging terrains, providing real-time intelligence.
2. Risk Reduction: By deploying robotic units instead of human soldiers or canine units, the risk to human life in high-threat areas is minimized.
3. Operational Efficiency: The ability to carry supplies and small arms increases the operational efficiency of soldiers in remote and difficult terrains, ensuring they are well-equipped and supported.
4. Technological Advancement: Integrating advanced robotics into military operations represents a technological leap, positioning the Indian Army at the forefront of modern warfare strategies.
