Renewed RGSA: Empowering Rural Self-Governance

  Aug 26, 2023

Revamped Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA)

The revamped Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA) is a centrally-sponsored program in India aimed at strengthening the capacities of rural local governance institutions. Its primary objective is to empower and enhance the effectiveness of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and other rural local bodies. The program focuses on improving the functioning of PRIs by providing training, capacity building, and technical assistance to elected representatives and officials at the grassroots level.

Through RGSA, the Indian government aims to facilitate decentralized governance, effective service delivery, and local development planning. The program seeks to empower rural communities to participate actively in decision-making processes and to address local issues effectively. RGSA is aligned with the broader goal of achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level, promoting sustainable and inclusive rural development.

RGSA emphasizes the importance of strengthening the administrative and financial capabilities of PRIs to enable them to perform their functions efficiently. It also encourages transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in local governance. The program provides financial support to states and Union Territories for implementing capacity-building initiatives, promoting good governance practices, and improving the overall functioning of rural local bodies.
