What is RGM?
The Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) is an initiative by the Indian government aimed at enhancing milk productivity and preserving the indigenous breeds of cattle. The mission focuses on the genetic improvement of cattle through various advanced techniques and supports the overall development of the dairy sector.
Proposal to Revamp RGM
The proposal to revamp the Rashtriya Gokul Mission includes:
1. Advanced Genetic Technologies: Implementation of in-vitro fertilization, sex-sorted semen, and genomic selection to improve the genetic quality of cattle.
2. Increased Budget: An allocation of ₹600 crore to support the enhancements and ensure effective implementation.
3. Improved Productivity: Strategies to increase milk yield and improve the overall health and productivity of indigenous breeds.
4. Wider Farmer Participation: Initiatives to attract more farmers to dairy farming through better support and improved cattle breeds.
Why Revamp RGM?
The need to revamp the Rashtriya Gokul Mission arises from:
1. Low Milk Productivity: The current productivity levels are lower than global standards, necessitating technological interventions to boost yields.
2. Climate Challenges: Indigenous breeds are facing challenges due to climate change, affecting their productivity and health.
3. Resource Optimization: Efficient use of resources through advanced genetic technologies to enhance the quality and profitability of dairy farming.
4. Farmer Welfare: Improved cattle breeds and productivity will lead to better incomes and livelihoods for farmers engaged in dairy farming.
