1. What are perovskites?

Perovskites are a class of materials with a specific crystal structure, named after the mineral perovskite (calcium titanium oxide). For photovoltaics, the term refers to a broad range of materials sharing the same basic structure, often including organic and inorganic components.

2. Why are perovskites exciting for solar cells?

● High Efficiency: Perovskite solar cells have achieved incredible progress in recent years, with record efficiencies now surpassing 25%. This rivals traditional silicon-based cells.

● Low-Cost Potential: Perovskites can be made using simpler and potentially cheaper manufacturing methods, like solution processing or printing techniques.

● Versatility: They can be tuned to absorb different parts of the light spectrum, making them suitable for tandem cells (layered solar cells) for even higher efficiency.

3. What are the challenges facing perovskite solar cells?

● Stability: Perovskites are susceptible to degradation when exposed to moisture, heat, and light, limiting their lifespan.

● Scalability: While lab-scale perovskite cells are efficient, producing large-scale, commercially viable panels is still a work in progress.

● Toxicity: Some perovskite compositions contain lead, raising environmental concerns and requiring careful design and handling.
