Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) - July 2023

What is the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D)?

The PGI-D is a comprehensive report developed by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L) under the Ministry of Education. It assesses the effectiveness of the education system at the district level across India.

What is the scale and scope of education covered by the PGI-D?

The Indian Education System encompasses about 14.9 lakh (1,490,000) schools, catering to approximately 26.5 crore (265 million) students from diverse backgrounds. This vast network is supported by around 95 lakh (9.5 million) educators.

How is the PGI-D structured?

The PGI-D employs an 83-indicator-based grading system categorized under six categories and 12 domains. These include Outcomes, Effective Classroom Transaction, Infrastructure Facilities & Student’s Entitlements, School Safety & Child Protection, Digital Learning, and Governance Process.

What does the grading system in PGI-D entail?

Districts are graded on a scale of ten, with 'Daksh' representing the highest grade for districts scoring over 90% of the total points. The lowest grade, 'Akanshi-3', is for scores up to 10% of the total points.

What is the objective of the PGI-D?

The PGI-D aims to empower districts to identify areas needing improvement and prioritize interventions. This focus is intended to enhance educational outcomes and ensure a holistic, quality learning experience for students.

How can districts use the PGI-D for improvement?

By analyzing their performance in the identified domains and categories, districts can take targeted actions to address specific areas of concern. This proactive approach is designed to elevate the overall quality of education and student experiences.

SRIRAM’s Insight:

The PGI-D represents a significant stride in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of the Indian education system at the district level. By providing a detailed and structured assessment, it offers a valuable tool for districts to pinpoint areas for improvement and implement targeted strategies. This initiative is crucial for advancing educational standards and fostering an environment conducive to comprehensive learning and development.
