What is the Outer Space Treaty (OST)?

The Outer Space Treaty, formally known as the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, is an international treaty that provides the basic framework for international space law. It was opened for signature in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union in 1967 and forms the basis for all space-related activities.

Why was it created?

The OST was established to ensure that the exploration of outer space would be carried out for the benefit of all countries and that it would be free from the territorial claims and militarization that characterized the Cold War on Earth. It was intended to support the peaceful use of outer space, prevent new forms of colonial competition, and provide a legal framework for international cooperation in space exploration.

Why is the Outer Space Treaty important?

Global Cooperation:

The treaty promotes the peaceful use of outer space and prohibits the placement of nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction in space. It declares that the Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used exclusively for peaceful purposes.

Legal Framework:

The OST establishes that space shall be free for exploration and use by all countries and that no nation can claim sovereignty of outer space or any celestial body. It also holds every participating state liable for damages caused by their space objects and requires them to avoid harmful contamination of space and celestial bodies.
