MIGRANT WORKERS:CHALLENGES IN VOTING

Migrant workers in India encounter significant challenges when it comes to voting due to the high costs and potential job losses involved in traveling back to their home states. These economic and logistical barriers lead to lower voter turnout among this demographic, as many workers cannot afford the trip or the loss of income.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has acknowledged these issues and discussed potential solutions like Remote Electronic Voting Machines (RVMs). However, no current proposals exist to implement remote voting for domestic migrants. Allowing migrants to vote at their work destinations could significantly increase their participation in elections. Implementing such measures requires political will and accurate data on internal migration.

The ECI has made efforts to include specific migrant groups in the voting process, indicating a willingness to expand voter inclusion. However, a comprehensive national solution for internal migrants is still needed.

Improving voter participation among migrant workers necessitates accurate migration data and pilot studies in migrant corridors to evaluate the feasibility of remote voting. Ensuring that migrant workers are included in electoral rolls at their work locations and are well-informed about their voting rights are crucial steps toward enhancing their electoral participation.
