Maratha Military Landscape: UNESCO World Heritage Nomination

The Ministry of Culture of India has officially nominated the ‘Maratha Military Landscape’ for the UNESCO World Heritage List for the 2024-25 cycle. This prestigious nomination comprises 12 significant fortifications that exemplify the military prowess and architectural ingenuity of the Maratha rulers from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
Significance:
Historical Importance: These landscapes showcase the rich and vibrant history of India, reflecting the strategic military intelligence of the Maratha Empire.
Geographical Diversity: Spread across Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, these forts represent diverse physiographic regions - the Sahyadri mountain ranges, the Konkan Coast, Deccan Plateau, and the Eastern Ghats.
Architectural Marvels: The forts display unique hierarchical and typological features, ingeniously integrating the landscape and terrain.

Protection Status:
Eight forts are under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The remaining four are maintained by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Maharashtra.
Previous Considerations: The Maratha Military Landscape was previously included in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2021.
