LDN: UNCCD's Strategy for Sustainable Land Use

What is Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN)?

Land Degradation Neutrality is a state in which the amount and quality of land resources necessary to support ecosystem functions and services and enhance food security remain stable or increase within specified time and geography and ecosystems.

Why is LDN important?

LDN is crucial because it aims to halt the ongoing loss of productive land by balancing the rates of land degradation with restoration and sustainable land management. This balance is essential to maintain the health of land resources, which supports biodiversity, food security, and the livelihoods of billions of people.

How is LDN achieved?

Achieving LDN requires three concurrent actions:

● Avoiding new degradation by maintaining existing healthy land.

● Reducing existing degradation through sustainable land management practices that increase land productivity, biodiversity, and soil health.

● Restoring degraded lands to a natural or more productive state.

What are the objectives of the UNCCD for LDN?

The UNCCD's objectives for LDN include:

● Maintaining or improving the sustainable delivery of ecosystem services.

● Maintaining or improving land productivity to enhance global food security.

● Increasing the resilience of land and the populations dependent on it.

● Seeking synergies with other social, economic, and environmental objectives.

● Reinforcing and promoting responsible and inclusive land governance.

How many countries are participating in the initiative to achieve LDN?

Currently, 131 of the world’s 196 countries have pledged or are aiming to achieve land degradation neutrality by 2030. More than 100 countries participate in the Changwon Initiative, which supports national voluntary target-setting processes to achieve LDN.

These FAQs provide a broad overview of the concept of Land Degradation Neutrality, its importance, the steps towards achieving it, and the global commitment to combating land degradation under the auspices of the UNCCD.
