The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Botanical Research Institute (CSIR-NBRI) proudly announced the launch of an improved variety of the national flower, Lotus, named 'Namoh 108' in 2023. This remarkable variety, which boasts 108 petals, stands out for its enhanced weather resilience and prolonged flowering period from March to December.
‘Namoh 108’ was initially brought to the CSIR-NBRI by scientists from Manipur, India, where it was subjected to extensive research and development. Notably, this Lotus variety marks a significant scientific achievement as it is the first of its kind to have its genome completely sequenced. This breakthrough in genetic research not only highlights the advanced capabilities of CSIR-NBRI in the field of botanical sciences but also opens new avenues for the study and conservation of plant biodiversity.
The introduction of ‘Namoh 108’ represents a milestone in floral research and development, offering potential benefits for horticulture, ecology, and aesthetic landscaping across various climates and regions. By extending the flowering season and enhancing resilience to weather changes, this Lotus variety promises to be a valuable addition to India’s floral heritage and a symbol of scientific progress in plant research.
