ISRO's NETRA Project: Safeguarding Space with Advanced Tracking

NETRA is an initiative aimed at enhancing India’s capabilities in space situational awareness, particularly in monitoring and managing space debris. Here are some detailed facts about NETRA:

1. Purpose and Scope:

NETRA is designed to provide ISRO with autonomous capability to track and monitor the position of satellites and space debris as small as 10 cm in size at geostationary orbit, and even smaller debris in lower orbits. This enables precise tracking of objects that pose collision risks to operational spacecraft and satellites.

2. Key Components and Facilities:

The project includes setting up a network of radar and optical telescopes across India. Key installations include a multi-object tracking radar (MOTR) which is one of the primary sensors for tracking space objects. Optical telescopes integrated into the network are equipped with high-speed cameras and frames to capture even fast-moving debris.

3. Collaboration and Integration:

NETRA is part of a broader strategy that involves collaboration with other international space agencies and organizations. By sharing data and insights, ISRO aims to contribute to global efforts in space traffic management and debris mitigation.

4. Strategic Goals:

Through NETRA, ISRO aims to achieve a comprehensive mapping of space debris around Earth’s orbit, which will facilitate advanced mission planning to avoid potential collisions. The project is also a strategic step towards safeguarding India’s existing and future space assets.

5. Enhancing Safety and Longevity of Space Missions:

By improving the capability to track space objects and predict their trajectories, NETRA enhances the safety and longevity of space missions by enabling timely evasive maneuvers and informed decision-making regarding satellite launches and orbits.

6. Contribution to Global Efforts:

NETRA enhances ISRO’s participation in global efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of space operations. By providing accurate and timely data on space debris, NETRA helps in formulating international policies and guidelines on space debris mitigation.

This initiative not only strengthens India’s space defense infrastructure but also positions it as a significant player in international efforts to manage space traffic and mitigate debris risks effectively.
