India has reported a significant reduction in the incidence and mortality rates of tuberculosis (TB) since 2015, according to the India TB report 2024 released by the Union Health Ministry. The concerted efforts towards early detection and treatment initiation, coupled with community engagement initiatives, have led to a 16% decline in new TB cases and an 18% reduction in TB mortality rates over the period.

Incidence Rate Decline: The incidence rate of TB in India decreased from 237 per lakh population in 2015 to 199 per lakh population in 2022.
- Mortality Rate Reduction: The mortality rate from TB fell from 28 per lakh population in 2015 to 23 per lakh population in 2022.
- Private Sector Engagement: In 2023, nearly 32% of TB case notifications came from the private healthcare sector, marking a 17% increase from the previous year.
- Overall Notification Improvement: The notification of TB cases has seen an over 50% improvement on an annual basis in the last nine years, with Uttar Pradesh recording the highest increase in notifications (21% compared to the previous year).
- Post-COVID-19 Strategy: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) has been actively working towards the accelerated elimination of TB, as outlined in the National Strategic Plan 2017–25. The NTEP has continued to offer free diagnostic services, conducting approximately 1.89 crore sputum smear tests.
The report underscores India's commitment to eliminating TB by 2025, demonstrating the effectiveness of the country's strategies and interventions in the battle against this infectious disease.
