Indian Suicide Statistics: NCRB Report Highlights



Overview:

The National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) of India released a concerning report on the suicide statistics for 2022, highlighting the vulnerability of certain demographic groups.

Suicide Data:

High Incidence: Over 1.7 lakh suicides in 2022.

Vulnerable Groups: Nearly one-third were daily wage earners, agricultural laborers, and farmers.

Regional Data: Highest numbers in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.

Additional Insights:

Crime Against SC/ST: Increase in crimes against Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), especially in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana.

UAPA Cases: A 25% rise in Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) cases, but a decrease in sedition cases.

Fake Currency Seizure: Over Rs.342 crore worth of fake currency notes seized.

Specific Demographics:

Home-makers: Over 52% of the approximately 48,000 women who committed suicide were homemakers.

Students: Over 12,000 student suicides.

Employment Status: Significant numbers among self-employed, salaried professionals, and the unemployed.

Causes of Suicides:

Predominantly due to family problems and illness.

Drug abuse, alcohol addiction, and marriage-related issues, notably dowry, were also significant factors.

States with Zero Reported Suicides:

Certain States/UTs reported zero suicides among farmers, cultivators, and agricultural laborers.
