1. Anti-Piracy Operation on March 15-16, 2024:
• Objective: To rescue the hijacked merchant vessel ex-MV Ruen and its crew from Somali pirates.
• Action: The Indian Navy and Air Force collaborated, resulting in the surrender of 35 Somali pirates and the safe evacuation of 17 crew members.

• INS Kolkata: Intercepted and disabled the pirate ship.

2. Increased Maritime Surveillance in Late 2023:
• Objective: To counter rising drone attacks and piracy threats in the Central and North Arabian Sea.
• Action: Deployment of destroyers and frigates, along with enhanced aerial surveillance.
• Outcome: Strengthened maritime security and protection of merchant vessels in the region.

3. Anti-Piracy Operations by INS Sumitra in January 2024:
• Objective: To rescue crew members from hijacked ships off the East Coast of Somalia.
• Action: Two successful operations, rescuing a total of 36 crew members from Somali pirates.
• Outcome: Display of maritime vigilance and precision by the Indian Navy.

Significance

The anti-piracy operation carried out by the Indian Navy on March 15-16, 2024, has significantly enhanced India’s position as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region. This operation demonstrated India’s capability to conduct complex maritime security operations far from its coastline.
