Hussainsagar Lake Crisis - Causes, Consequences, and Solutions

What is the Hussainsagar Lake, and why is it important?

Hussainsagar Lake is one of the largest manmade lakes in Asia, connecting the cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It has historical importance dating back to the 16th century and once served as the primary source of drinking water for Hyderabad.

What is the current state of the lake?

The lake is severely polluted, with high levels of chemical and biochemical pollutants. It has also been shrinking in size due to sedimentation and the construction of manmade islands. Encroachments and developmental projects have also reduced its size.

What are the environmental challenges facing the lake?

Silt and Sewage Accumulation: Accumulation of sewage and silt is turning into islands, changing the lake's ecology.

Pollution: Data from the Telangana State Pollution Control Board shows alarming levels of pollutants, including heavy metals.

Encroachment: Both edge and middle of the lake have been encroached upon for 'aesthetic' and developmental reasons.

What are these man-made islands?

These islands were created by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) for supposed aesthetic appeal but are contributing to the shrinking and pollution of the lake.

Are industries contributing to the pollution?

Yes, industrial waste from localities like Sanathnagar, Jeedimetla, and Kukatpally flows directly into the lake. Heavy metals have been attributed to battery and electroplating industries.

What steps have been taken for lake conservation?

Numerous attempts, such as the Hussainsagar Catchment Improvement Project, have been made but without lasting success. Committees have been appointed, but the outcomes are not promising.

What solutions are being proposed?

Activists and scientists call for a comprehensive approach to tackle both pollution and encroachment.

Plans for additional Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are in place, but none are operational yet.

Calls for a science-backed action plan to address the issues at the source, rather than cosmetic solutions.
