HUMAN-ANIMAL CONFLICTS:KERALA'S EFFORTS TO REDUCE
WHAT INITIATIVES HAS KERALA TAKEN TO REDUCE HUMAN-ANIMAL CONFLICTS?
Kerala has introduced species-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in 10 wildlife zones to reduce human-animal conflicts. These SOPs include guidelines such as identifying raiding animals, tracking and radio-collaring them, and developing early warning systems.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES FACED?
- Human-animal conflicts, particularly with wild elephants and wild boars, remain significant.
- Implementation of previous SOPs has been inconsistent, with numerous fatalities still occurring.
- Farmers require immediate relief and compensation for losses caused by wildlife.
HOW IS THE GOVERNMENT ADDRESSING COORDINATION ISSUES?
An inter-state consultative committee with officials from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has been established to monitor and share information about animal movements.
WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS FROM THE NEW SOPs?
The success of the new SOPs depends on effective implementation, community participation, and timely compensation for affected farmers. Coordination among states and scientific monitoring of animal behavior are crucial for long-term solutions.
