Introduction

Gangotri Glacier is one of the largest and most important glaciers in the Indian Himalayas. It is the primary source of the Ganges River, which is one of the most significant rivers in India both culturally and geographically.

- Region: Uttarkashi District, Uttarakhand, India

- Latitude and Longitude: Approximately 30°43′N 79°8′E

- Elevation: The glacier's altitude ranges from about 4,100 meters (13,450 feet) at its snout to over 6,800 meters (22,310 feet) at its upper reaches.

Physical Characteristics

- Length: Approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles)

- Width: Varies between 0.5 to 2.5 kilometers (0.3 to 1.6 miles)

- Area: Covers about 143 square kilometers (55 square miles)

Formation and Structure

Gangotri Glacier is a compound valley glacier, which means it is fed by several tributary glaciers joining from the sides. These tributaries include Raktvarn, Chaturangi, and Swachand glaciers. 

Key Features

- Snout: The snout of the glacier is known as Gomukh, which means "Cow's Mouth" due to its resemblance to a cow's mouth.

- Glacial Features: It exhibits typical glacial features such as crevasses, seracs, moraines (lateral, medial, and terminal), and icefalls.

- Terminus: The glacier terminates at Gomukh, from where the Bhagirathi River originates. The Bhagirathi later joins the Alaknanda River to form the Ganges.

Hydrology

- Source of the Ganges: The meltwater from Gangotri Glacier forms the Bhagirathi River, which is one of the main headstreams of the Ganges.

- Seasonal Variation: The flow of meltwater increases during the summer months due to higher temperatures causing increased melting of the glacier.

- Pilgrimage: Gangotri Glacier holds immense religious significance for Hindus. The town of Gangotri, located near the glacier, is a major pilgrimage site.
