FUTURE OF DISPLAY MANUFACTURING IN INDIA
India currently relies heavily on China for its display needs, lacking a domestic display manufacturing industry.
Introduction
The global display market is projected to reach $187.8 billion in 2023, growing at a 3.5% CAGR until 2028. Despite being the world’s third-largest consumer of display products, India has not yet developed its own display manufacturing sector.
What is Display Manufacturing?
Display manufacturing involves the production of various types of display panels used in electronic devices. These include LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode), and other advanced display technologies. The process includes multiple stages such as substrate preparation, thin-film transistor (TFT) array formation, cell assembly, and module assembly. These displays are integral to devices like televisions, smartphones, laptops, automotive displays, and medical equipment.
Current Scenario
Most display manufacturing is concentrated in Asia, with China holding a 69% market share in LCD display panels, followed by Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. India, meanwhile, remains dependent on imports, especially from China, for its display needs.
Government Initiatives
In December 2021, the Indian government announced a Rs 76,000 crore scheme for semiconductor and display fabrication. This scheme has primarily focused on the semiconductor ecosystem, neglecting the display sector. However, there are emerging discussions and plans to establish display manufacturing facilities in India within the next few years.
Challenges and Opportunities
While the NEP’s vision for transforming India into a global knowledge superpower faces significant challenges, the prospects for display manufacturing are promising:
• Policy Support: The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) offers substantial capex support, supplemented by state governments.
• Potential Market: Investing in display manufacturing technologies in India could significantly reduce dependency on imports and strengthen the local supply chain.
Conclusion
To achieve technological self-reliance and bolster its electronics manufacturing capabilities, India must prioritize the development of a domestic display manufacturing industry. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and holds significant long-term benefits for the Indian economy.
