ENVIRONMENT PERFORMANCE INDEX (EPI): 2024 KEY POINTS

WHAT IS EPI?

The Environment Performance Index (EPI) is a biennial report that evaluates countries’ environmental performance based on their environmental health, ecosystem vitality, and climate change mitigation efforts.

CRITERIA

The EPI assesses countries across 11 categories, including:

• Air quality
• Water quality
• Waste management
• Biodiversity and habitat
• Climate change
• Emissions
• Energy use
• Environmental health
• Ecosystem services
• Sustainable development

WHO COMPILES EPI?

The EPI is compiled by the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy and the Center for International Earth Sciences Information Network at Columbia University, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum.

METHODOLOGY

The EPI uses a range of data sources, including international organizations, government agencies, and research institutions, to evaluate countries’ environmental performance. The report employs a robust methodology that includes data normalization, aggregation, and weighting to ensure comparability across countries.

PURPOSE

The EPI aims to provide a comprehensive overview of countries’ environmental performance, highlighting areas of strength and weakness, and encouraging policymakers to take action to improve environmental outcomes.

INDIA’S RANKING AND PERFORMANCE

Ranking in 2024:
India ranks 176th out of 180 countries in the overall index.

Main Reasons for Poor Performance:

• Heavy dependence on coal
• High air pollution levels
• Projected emissions

Air Quality:
India ranks 177th, above only Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

Projected Emissions by 2025:
India ranks 172nd in projected emissions.

Biodiversity and Habitat:
India’s performance is poor due to the unavailability of data.

Climate Change:
India ranks 133rd, mainly due to investments in renewable energy and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Investment Needs:
India requires an additional $160 billion per year in climate change mitigation investments to achieve its goals.
