DEATHS OF INDIAN PILGRIMS DURING HAJ PILGRIMAGE



1. HOW MANY INDIANS PARTICIPATED IN HAJ THIS YEAR?

This year, 1,75,000 Indians visited Mecca for the Haj pilgrimage from May 9 to July 22, 2024.

2. HOW MANY INDIAN PILGRIMS DIED DURING THE HAJ PILGRIMAGE THIS YEAR?

A total of 98 Indian pilgrims have died during the Haj pilgrimage this year.

3. WHAT WERE THE CAUSES OF DEATH?

The deaths were primarily due to natural causes, chronic illnesses, and old age. Additionally, six people died on the day of Arafat, and four deaths were related to accidents.

4. HOW DOES THIS YEAR’S DEATH TOLL COMPARE TO LAST YEAR’S?

Last year, 187 Indian pilgrims died during the entire Haj period. This year’s death toll is lower, with 98 reported deaths so far.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) monitors the well-being of Indian pilgrims and provides necessary assistance. Medical facilities and emergency response teams are available at pilgrimage sites to handle health issues and emergencies.

The MEA tracks incidents and provides updates during media briefings. They also coordinate with local authorities to ensure that the families of the deceased are informed and supported.

To mitigate health risks, several measures can be considered:

• Awareness Campaigns: Informative campaigns to educate pilgrims about the physical demands of the pilgrimage and necessary precautions.

The Haj pilgrimage is a physically demanding journey involving long periods of walking and exposure to extreme weather conditions. Elderly individuals and those with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable.
