The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) is a collaborative effort compiled by Germanwatch, the NewClimate Institute, and the Climate Action Network. It provides a means to assess and compare the climate performance of various countries. The index is instrumental in highlighting the efforts of nations like India, which, despite environmental challenges, have shown progress in climate action, earning it a commendable ranking.
Key Components of the CCPI:
GHG Emissions (40%): This category gauges a country’s emissions level, considering both absolute figures and per capita data, as well as emission development patterns. Renewable Energy (20%): It evaluates the share of renewable energy sources in the national energy mix and the growth rate of renewable energy development. Energy Use (20%): This measures the country’s energy efficiency, energy consumption patterns, and trends. Climate Policy (20%): This assesses the country’s climate policy framework, its international engagement, and national policy implementation efficacy.
India’s positioning as the seventh suggests a proactive approach toward climate policy and renewable energy utilization. While Denmark leads with exemplary initiatives, India’s performance, particularly in the G20 context, underscores the need for continued improvement in global climate efforts.
The CCPI is a clear indicator of where countries stand in their climate action journey, encouraging higher environmental standards and accountability on the global stage.
