CCS in India: Climate Solutions

  Mar 22, 2024

Carbon Capture and Storage in India:

What is CCS?

  • CCS stands for Carbon Capture and Storage.

  • It involves capturing CO2 from power plants and factories, transporting it, and storing it deep underground permanently.

Why India needs CCS:

  • Coal reliance: India still depends heavily on coal for power, creating high emissions. CCS allows for cleaner use of coal during the transition to renewable energy.

  • Hard-to-abate industries: Industries like cement and steel are difficult to make carbon-free. CCS can drastically cut their emissions.

  • Climate goals: CCS is key for India to meet its net-zero emissions target.

How CCS Works

  1. Capture: CO2 is separated from other gases at the source.

  2. Transport: Pipelines carry the CO2 to storage sites.

  3. Storage: CO2 is injected into suitable rock formations far underground.

India's CCS Potential

  • Good storage sites: India has ideal geology for storing CO2 (depleted oil fields, deep aquifers, etc.).

Challenges to Overcome:

  • Cost: CCS technology is still expensive.

  • Policy: Clear government incentives and regulations are needed.

  • Public awareness: People need to understand CCS is safe and necessary.

The Future of CCS in India

The next decade is vital for developing cheaper CCS technology and getting supportive policies in place. CCS could then play a major role in India's clean energy future, allowing for growth without sacrificing climate goals.
