What are Bulk Drugs?

Bulk Drugs, also known as Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), are the main ingredients of a drug or medicine. They provide the therapeutic effects or intended pharmacological activity.

What is a Bulk Drug Park?

A Bulk Drug Park is a specialized zone that provides common infrastructure facilities for the manufacturing of bulk drugs. It aims to create a robust ecosystem for bulk drug manufacturing in the country and reduce manufacturing costs significantly.

What is the purpose of the Scheme for Promotion of Bulk Drug Parks?

The scheme aims to support the manufacturing of bulk drugs in the country. It provides financial assistance to states for establishing Bulk Drug Parks. The goal is to bring down the cost of manufacturing of bulk drugs by creating world-class common infrastructure facilities supported by the Central Government, thereby increasing the competitiveness of the domestic bulk drug industry.

Which states have received ‘in-principle’ approval for establishing Bulk Drug Parks?

The Department of Pharmaceuticals has conveyed ‘in-principle’ approval to the proposals of Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh.

What is the financial outlay of the scheme?

The scheme, notified in 2020, has a financial outlay of Rs. 3,000 crores.

What is the financial assistance provided under the scheme?

The financial assistance to the proposed Bulk Drug Park in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh would be 70% of the project cost of common infrastructure facilities. In the case of Himachal Pradesh, being a hilly state, financial assistance would be 90% of the project cost. The maximum assistance under the scheme for one Bulk Drug Park would be limited to Rs. 1000 crores.
