In a significant development, Assam has proudly announced that 12 of its unique items have been granted Geographical Indication (GI) tags. This recognition, facilitated by the efforts of Padma Shri Dr. Rajani Kant, a GI Expert, in collaboration with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) regional office in Guwahati, marks a substantial achievement for the region.
These items encompass a broad range of traditional crafts and products, highlighting the diverse cultural heritage of Assam. Among these, six traditional crafts have been spotlighted for their unique cultural significance and craftsmanship. These include Sarthebari’s distinguished metal craft, Asharikandi’s renowned terracotta, the Assam Bihu Dhol, Jaapi (a traditional conical hat), and crafts related to jotha, gogona, kham, serza, sifung, further complemented by items crafted from Panimeteka (water hyacinth), dhool, and the Mising taat (handloom) product.
The awarding of GI tags to these products not only honors the skilled artisans behind them but also supports nearly one lakh individuals directly, contributing significantly to the local economy and preserving the cultural heritage of Assam.
A GI tag is a sign of authenticity that ensures a product’s specific geographical origin and possesses qualities or a reputation due to that origin. The recognition by the Geographical Indication Registry underlines the uniqueness of these items and aids in safeguarding the intellectual property rights of the artisans.
This move is a stride towards recognizing and valuing the traditional crafts and products of Assam, promoting them globally and ensuring the sustainable development of the region’s cultural and economic landscape.
