What Are Artificial Reefs?

Artificial reefs are man-made structures placed in marine environments to mimic natural reefs, promoting fish aggregation and marine habitat growth.

Purpose of Artificial Reefs in India?

To boost fish populations, support fisher livelihoods, and enhance marine biodiversity.

Recent Deployment in Mumbai?

Over 200 artificial reefs were installed at Worli Koliwada in February 2023.

Government Initiative?

Part of the Prime Minister’s Matsya Sampada Yojana, led by CMFRI, aiming to promote sustainable fisheries across 3,477 fishing villages in India.

Success Stories?

Positive impacts on fish populations and biodiversity in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat.
