ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE and CLIMATE CHANGE

Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) help in fighting climate change?

Yes, AI can be a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. It can improve the accuracy of predictions for extreme weather events, enhance our understanding and management of energy infrastructures like power grids, and optimize the integration of renewable energy sources. Through these applications, AI holds potential to significantly contribute to climate mitigation efforts.

Does AI have a negative impact on the environment?

AI systems require substantial amounts of computing power and data storage, leading to a considerable carbon footprint due to high energy consumption and the emissions from producing hardware. Data centers and transmission networks, essential for AI operations, account for over 1% of global energy use and 0.6% of global carbon emissions. Hence, while AI has beneficial applications, its operational aspects can negatively impact the environment.

How can AI reduce the carbon footprint of climate models?

AI, particularly machine learning techniques, can simulate complex climate phenomena, such as cloud formation, which are currently challenging to model accurately.
