The ancient site of Agroha is located in the village of Agroha, within the Tehsil-Adampur, in the district of Hisar.
Historical Timeline
The site spans a vast historical period from approximately the 4th century BC to the 14th century AD.
Historical Significance
Agroha is reputed to have been the capital of the legendary King Maharaja Agrasena of the Agrawal community. Positioned on the vital ancient trade route connecting Taxila to Mathura, Agroha emerged as a crucial hub of commerce and political activities until the establishment of Hisar-e-Firoza (Hisar) by Firoz Shah Tughlaq.
Archaeological Discoveries
The archaeological explorations have unearthed a significant hoard of coins at Agroha, including four Indo-Greek coins, one punch-marked coin, and another 51 coins of Agrodaka, signifying the city’s ancient economic activities. Furthermore, the discovery of coins from the Agreya Janapada (Republic) during excavations and references to its ancient name, Agrodaka, in historical texts confirm its status as a republic’s headquarters.
Initial excavations were conducted by C.J. Rodgers in 1888-89 and later by H.L. Srivastava in 1938-39 under the Archaeological Survey of India. These explorations revealed a depth of about 3.65 meters. Subsequent excavations by Shri P.K. Sharan and Shri J.S. Khatri from the Department of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Haryana, between 1978-84, disclosed a fortified township with evidence of continuous habitation from the 4th century BC to the 14th century AD.
Cultural and Architectural Findings
The site presented residential and community houses constructed from baked bricks. Remarkably, the coexistence of a Buddhist stupa alongside a Hindu temple at the site reflects a history of communal harmony and religious coexistence.
Conclusion
The ancient site of Agroha stands as a testament to the rich historical and cultural fabric of the region, showcasing a blend of religious harmony, economic prosperity, and political significance through centuries.
