What is a living will?
A living will is a written document that specifies a person’s wishes regarding medical treatment in circumstances where they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves.

Who was the first person in Goa to register a living will?
Justice M S Sonak of the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court was the first person to register a living will in Goa.

When was the living will registered?
The living will was registered on May 31, 2024.

What is the significance of this registration?
This registration marks the beginning of the formal implementation of advance medical directives in Goa, following guidelines issued by the Supreme Court of India.

What did the Supreme Court rule regarding passive euthanasia?
In 2018, the Supreme Court of India legalized passive euthanasia, contingent upon the person having a living will. The Court provided guidelines for the process, which were further eased in 2023.

How is a living will made in Goa?

1. Draft the living will in the presence of two witnesses.
2. Have it certified by a gazetted officer or a notary.
3. Forward it to the main Mamlatdar of the taluka.
4. The Mamlatdar will send it to the nodal officer appointed by the District Collector for safe custody.

Preliminary discussions began in February 2024, and the mechanism was put in place within a few months with support from the High Court of Bombay at Goa and the GSLSA.
