Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 2019

What does the Act do? 

A. The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 2019 amends the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956. The Act fixes the maximum number of judges in the Supreme Court at 30 judges (excluding the Chief Justice of India). This increases the number from 30 to 33. 

How is the strength of the Supreme Court fixed?

The strength of Supreme Court is fixed by law enacted Parliament as per Article 124 (1) of Constitution of India. Therefore, strength of Supreme Court judges can be increased by way of parliamentary legislation. 

What is the pendency level in the apex court?

As of June 1, 2019 there are 58,669 cases pending in the Supreme Court.
