Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971,Amendment

What was the purpose of the original act?

It is an Act to provide for the termination of certain pregnancies by registered medical practitioners and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

Whats new amendment proposes to change?

Why we need amendment?

The original act is highly restrictive in the sense of time limit and less choice for abortion and a little regard to Right of women. Also the act permitted abortion beyond 20 weeks with permission of court, which has caused problems in many cases. For Example- A minor was raped and was forced to give birth as by the time he court permitted her pregnancy, it has already crossed safe limit for abortion.

Other than the Act -  A 2015 study in the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics has observed that 10-13% of maternal deaths in India can be attributed to unsafe abortions. Many of those who survive such methods are compelled to live a life of pain compounded by infertility, sepsis and other internal injuries. So the Act was creating a silent sufferer.

Hows the new act can be a way for New women in India?
