Question : ‘Kigali Agreement’, recently seen in news, is aimed towards:
Reducing the use of highly potent Hydrofluorocarbons
Reducing the manufacture and use of Hydrofluorocarbons
Explanation: In the 28th meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, negotiators from 197 nations have signed a historic agreement to amend the Montreal Protocol in Kigali, a capital city of a tiny African country, Rwanda on 15th October 2016. As per the agreement, these countries are expected to reduce the manufacture and use of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by roughly 80-85% from their respective baselines, till 2045. This phase down is expected to arrest the global average temperature rise up to 0.5o C by 2100. Kigali agreement is an amendment to Montreal Protocol.
Hydrofluorocarbons: are organic compounds containing hydrogen, Carbon, and fluorine. They are commonly used as substitutes for Ozone depleting substances like Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and are used in refrigerators and air-conditioners. Though HFCs are not as harmful as CFCs for ozone layer depletion, they have a thousand times more potential to cause global warming effect than commonly known greenhouse gases like carbon Dioxide, methane etc.

Question : Which among the following is not a part of ‘Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)’?
The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), also known as TPP11is an agreed in principle trade agreement between Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. The CPTPP incorporates most of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) provisions by reference, but suspended 22 provisions the United States favored that other countries opposed, and lowered the threshold for enactment so the participation of the U.S. is not required. The TPP was signed on 4 February 2016, but never entered into force as a result of the withdrawal of the United States. All original TPP signatories, except the US, agreed in May 2017 to revive it and reached agreement in January 2018 to conclude the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. The formal signing ceremony was held on March 8, 2018 in Santiago, Chile.
